Move your data from a Windows PC to a Mac

By Kacey Kroh, Abshier House, Abshier House. Although using Migration Assistant can be helpful when transferring a large number of files and folders to your new Mac from a Windows-based PC, sometimes this process can be time-consuming (especially if you are just trying to send simple files such as music, photos, and videos or even individual documents). To use Migration Assistant on Mac, open the Finder, navigate to Applications, open the System Utilities folder, and then launch Migration Assistant.app by double-clicking the application icon. Keep in mind that you can also launch Migration Assistant from your dock's Launchpad (silver rocket icon).

If migration doesn't work

If the steps above don't work as expected, check these things.

Quit other PC apps.
Use these steps to make sure no other applications are open on your PC while you're trying to migrate your data:

  1. Press Alt-Tab to choose an open application.
  2. Press Alt-F4 to quit the selected application.

Check your network connection. If your PC doesn't appear in the Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant window on your Mac, make sure they're both connected to the same network. You can create an isolated network by connecting a single Ethernet cable between your Mac and PC. If Migration Assistant on your Mac still doesn't list your PC, try disabling any Firewall software on your PC that might block network ports needed for Windows Migration Assistant to work. You can re-enable your firewall software after you're done migrating.

Disable anti-virus software. If Migration Assistant won't open on your PC, temporarily disable any anti-virus software on your PC and try opening Migration Assistant again. You can re-enable your anti-virus software after migration is finished.

If you're unable to use Migration Assistant to transfer your files from your PC to your Mac, you can also manually copy your important data to your Mac using an external drive or file sharing.
